The Best Northumbrian Burns Night Celebrations
You may have heard of it before, but what's Burn's Night all about? It's the one night of the year that a huge number of people, especially in the North of England and Scotland, come together to celebrate the life and works of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). It's always on or about the great man's birthday, January 25th and consists of a classic Scottish themed supper (usually including haggis), a whole lot of merriment and maybe even the odd Whisky or two.
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak' a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
So, where are the best places to experience a Burn's Night party in Northumberland? We've chosen a few of our favourite places below (in no particular order!):
The Northumberland Arms The Peth, West Thirston, Northumberland, NE65 9EE 01670 787 370
Located in West Thirston, but more commonly known as Felton(!) the Northumberland Arms is just along the road from the character packed Riverside Cottage. With live music on the 25th January and a four course supper for just £20, what's not to love?
Battlesteads Hotel Wark on Tyne nr Hexham Northumberland NE48 3LS 01434 230 209
One of our perennial favourites towards the South of the County (not far from Hadrian's Wall) is the wonderful Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant in Wark. This year their celebrations take place on Saturday 24th January with a Traditional Four Course Dinner, Traditional Burns Toasts & Speeches and a Northumbrian Piper. You won't get a much more authentic experience than that!
The Three Wheat Heads Thropton, Nr Rothbury, Northumberland, NE65 7LR 01669 620262
Offering simply the best views across the Coquet Valley towards Simonside that you could possibly hope for. The Three Wheat Heads is famous locally for its beer garden and hearty portion size! On the 24th January they're offering a traditional three course meal with a live piper and drummer, all for just £19.95. If you fancy a self catering weekend break you can browse our Cottages in the Rothbury area.
